Why this matters
Most of the diseases that spread fastest in crowded places don't travel through the air on their own — they travel on hands, on surfaces, and through water. A cough, a spit, an unwashed hand after using a toilet, or a food stall that doesn't wash vegetables properly are all ordinary moments that quietly decide whether an infection spreads to the next person or stops with you.
None of this needs special equipment. It needs a few habits done consistently, by enough people, in the places everyone shares.
What good looks like
Spitting and disease transmission. Saliva and mucus can carry bacteria and viruses. Some spread through touch — a wet surface someone else's hand or foot lands on after you've spat there. Others, like tuberculosis (TB), spread only through the air, when someone nearby breathes in droplets from a person coughing — not by touching a surface or dried spit. Spitting in a stairwell, lift, or any shared space still matters either way: it leaves a surface for the next person to step in or touch, and if you're coughing while you do it, anyone standing close enough can breathe in what you've just spread. If you need to spit, do it somewhere it won't be trodden through or touched by someone else — and covering a cough or sneeze matters for the same reason: it stops droplets reaching people nearby.
Public toilets. A public toilet only works as a shared resource if everyone leaves it usable for the next person: flush after use, don't block the drain with waste that doesn't belong there, and report a broken flush or blocked toilet rather than just avoiding it and leaving the problem for the next visitor. A toilet that a hundred people quietly avoid using properly becomes unusable for everyone within a week.
Open defecation and water contamination. Human waste left in the open doesn't stay where it's left — rain washes it into the nearest drain, pond, or groundwater source. Contaminated water is one of the most common routes for diseases like cholera and typhoid to spread through a whole neighbourhood, often through a well or hand pump that looks perfectly clean.
Handwashing at the right moments. Washing your hands matters most at specific points: before eating or cooking, after using the toilet, after touching money or a shared surface like a bus rail or door handle, and after coughing or sneezing into your hand. Water alone rinses visible dirt but doesn't remove most bacteria and viruses — soap and at least twenty seconds of scrubbing is what actually breaks them down.
Shared stairwells and lifts. These are the most-touched, least-cleaned surfaces in most buildings. Don't spit, litter, or store rubbish in them. A stairwell used as a dumping spot for one household's overflow waste becomes a hazard — and a health risk — for everyone who lives in the building.
Food-stall hygiene. Food sold on the street passes through more hands and more open air than food cooked at home. Look for a stall that covers its food, uses clean water, and doesn't let raw ingredients sit uncovered near flies and dust — and as someone running a stall, covering food and washing hands between handling raw ingredients and ready food is what actually keeps customers safe, not just what looks tidy.
What to do when you see it done wrong
If a public toilet is broken, filthy, or missing water, report it to the facility operator or your municipal sanitation channel rather than just avoiding it — a fault reported quickly gets fixed faster than one everyone silently works around. If you see open defecation near a water source, that's a public health risk worth flagging to your local municipal or health authority, since the contamination doesn't stay local to where it happened — it travels through water to everyone downstream. And if a food stall is visibly unhygienic, the simplest thing you can do is not eat there, and mention it to the stall owner or a local health inspector if you're comfortable doing so — silence just lets the same risk reach the next customer.
