India designs and builds its own fighter airframes but not the engines that fly them. The Kaveri programme never produced an engine cleared to power the Tejas, so frontline fighters run on imported turbofans, and the engine for the next-generation AMCA is being pursued through a foreign co-development partnership rather than a purely domestic design.
Why it matters
An engine is the hardest part of an aircraft and the easiest part to be cut off from. Every export licence, spares queue and price revision on an imported engine is leverage someone else holds over what the Air Force can fly. It is also the gateway technology: the metallurgy, cooling and turbine design that a fighter engine forces you to master are the same ones behind industrial gas turbines and civil aviation.
Where we actually are
GTRE's Kaveri ran and flew on a testbed but did not meet the thrust and weight targets to power the Tejas; a derivative is being pursued for unmanned platforms. Production fighters use imported engines. For AMCA, the route being pursued is co-development with a foreign engine maker, with the stated aim of full technology transfer and domestic IP.
What it would take
Single-crystal turbine blade casting at yield, thermal-barrier coatings, a full-scale altitude test facility, and — most of all — the patience to fund a decade of failed test articles. Every country that has done this treated it as a twenty-year national programme, not a procurement.
