AI accelerator chips designed and fabricated for India

The compute that trains and runs AI models is imported, expensive, and periodically export-controlled. India has designed processors — including indigenous CPU families used in national projects — but not a competitive AI accelerator, and would need somewhere to fabricate one if it did.
Why it matters
Accelerator supply has already been used as an instrument of policy by exporting countries. A national AI programme built entirely on hardware someone else can decline to ship is a programme with a foreign veto in it.
Where we actually are
Domestic processor families exist from national labs and have real deployments. Startups are designing inference silicon. Everything competitive is fabricated abroad, because the domestic fabs under construction are at nodes unsuited to it.
What it would take
Design is the least of it — the hard parts are memory bandwidth, advanced packaging, and a software stack that people actually want to use. The packaging piece is the one where domestic capacity is genuinely arriving, and it may matter more than the transistor node.
