India makes carbon fibre composites and has built real capability in laying them up — but the high-strength, high-modulus fibre that goes into aircraft primary structures is largely imported, and is export-controlled by the countries that make it. Domestic capacity exists at commodity grades and is being expanded; the top end is the gap.
Why it matters
Carbon fibre is on multilateral export control lists precisely because it is dual-use, which means the supply can be slowed or stopped for political reasons rather than commercial ones. Aircraft, launch vehicles, pressure vessels and wind blades all wait behind the same import queue.
Where we actually are
Domestic producers make commodity and intermediate-modulus grades, and national labs have demonstrated higher grades at pilot scale. Composite fabrication — layup, curing, autoclave work — is a genuine domestic strength. The precursor (polyacrylonitrile) chain and the highest-modulus tows are where the dependency sits.
What it would take
The precursor is the real bottleneck, not the carbonisation line: aerospace-grade PAN is its own hard chemistry problem. Then continuous-tow qualification, which takes years of destructive testing before an airframer will fly it.
